VELOX: Redefining E-Commerce

Trough a Headless Microservices Architecture

Project Overview

Reducing environment setup time from days to 30 minutes with a highly automated AWS EKS and Terraform foundation.

Sly AG is the innovator behind VELOX, the world's first open-source e-commerce platform built on a complete microservices architecture. With over 25 years of experience, the Sly team realized that conventional shop systems often forced customers into technical compromises. They envisioned a headless, modular foundation that could be tailored perfectly to B2B and B2C needs. While their initial prototype on AWS and Docker proved the concept, the increasing complexity of cloud management and integration into managed services led them to partner with copebit.

Together, the teams refined the VELOX foundation into a professional, "Well-Architected" cloud-native platform. The application, built on Java Spring Boot with 14 specialized microservices, was containerized and deployed on Amazon EKS (Managed Kubernetes). This allows the storefronts to scale elastically based on traffic. For data management, the solution utilizes Amazon DocumentDB (MongoDB compatible) for high-volume read/write workloads and RDS Aurora Serverless (MySQL) for a cost-effective, auto-scaling database experience.

The automation achieved is a game-changer: while setting up a new customer environment previously took several days of manual labor, it now takes only 30 minutes via Terraform (Infrastructure as Code). Security is integrated at every layer, including AWS Secrets Manager, cross-region backups, and full encryption with customer-managed keys. With fully automated CI/CD pipelines on GitLab, Sly can now focus entirely on the "User Experience" and e-commerce innovation while copebit ensures a stable, high-performance operation.

"We have created something that surpasses the performance of many large corporates, and we have done so simply by following two of our most important principles: 1) The user is at the center, his requirements are the ultimate goal of every project. 2) Every expert has his limits, it’s important to know them and seek external expertise for anything beyond that"
